Green society competition for housing societies & individuals to create awareness about environment friendly practices within societies in the field of water, waste and energy management was planned by club. To make this competition effective, one informative seminar was arranged. Experts in related fields gave inputs and also various vendors who provide services in these areas had put up the stalls to explain the measures to reduce/reuse/recycle water, waste & energy. Criteria for competition were set and explained. Four categories were created for competition viz. individual bungalow, individual flat, single building society & multiple buildings society. Renowned environmentalist Sumantai Kirloskar was the chief guest for the seminar. District director for non-medical projects Rtn. Jignasu Mehata was guest of honor. Two hundred representatives from various societies attended the seminar. Mayor of Pune, Smt. Mukta Tilak sent special video message for this seminar. Apart from seminar, information about competition was sent to 3000 housing societies through emails, SMS. This was done with the help of Federation of housing societies. Additionally Facebook public event was created to create awareness. Prior to seminar, one press conference was organized. This seminar received very good newspaper publicity. Total 46 societies from different parts of Pune(from Kothrud to Kondhava and Baner to Vishrantwadi) participated in various categories. Three months’ time was given to participants to implement or improve their green initiatives. Our volunteers were in constant touch with these participants to get updates and help whenever required. Towards the end of three months volunteers from club personally visited all these societies for primary review of the implementation. Shortlisting was done based on this review. Seventeen societies were shortlisted based on primary review. Jury panel consisting eight experts visited shortlisted societies. At every society around 5-10 representatives explained the initiatives implemented by them. Evaluation form was designed to make evaluation more objective. Winners were identified from all the categories. Prize distribution ceremony was organized to felicitate winners and all the participants. A short video was prepared and shown during the program to show the initiatives implemented. Renowned environmentalist Padmabhushan Madhavrao Gadgil was chief guest. PDG Rtn. Vinay Kulkarni was guest of honor. More than 150 society representatives and Rotarians attended this event. Overall this initiative of competition was very well appreciated by media & all the participants. This also received very good newspaper publicity. Club has decided to continue with initiative in coming years as well.
